Irish International MTB News- Great Results in XCO
During the past few weeks Cycling Ireland’s International riders have been busy in Europe, competing in events in Russia and Switzerland.
Form Russia With Points
The XCO MTB Squad managed by Geoff Seymour spent last week in Russia competing in two UCI Class 1 ranked events, both held in the Moscow region. On Thursday June 14th the first event on the teams schedule was the Itera Cup. Robin Seymour took a superb sixth place, the Wicklow based rider on a tremendous run of form at present. After being set free from the pressure of exams, Belfast’s Conor McConvey scored his best Class 1 result, the lanky teenager finishing a brilliant eighth. Niall Davis collected more ranking points for the mens team by finishing 11th.
In the Women's event Tarja Owens finished sixth and Ciara McManus 12th, the points collected moving the Irish Ladies Team closer to an Olympic qualification place.
Race two for the Irish Squad took place on Sunday 17th June, it was the Class 1 Velomarket CSKA Race, again held near Moscow. The Elite Mens race attracted an entry of 58 and again it was Robin Seymour who led the way for the Irish as he crossed the line in seventh place. This time out Niall Davis took tenth. After the jubilation following the previous race, Conor McConvey suffered a DNF on Sunday when he punctured on the last lap. Tarja Owens continued her impressive form with an eighth place in the Ladies race with Ciara McManus 13th.
On Sunday 1st July the Irish XCO Squad sets off for St Felicien in Quebec for the Canadian round of the World Cup. The team travelling will be Robin Seymour, Niall Davis, Conor McConvey and Tarja Owens.
Following this the next main target for the riders will be the Irish National XCO Championships (21st/22nd July) which will be held in Tollymore Forest Park, just outside Newcastle, County Down. Following months of negotiation with the Forest Service, race organiser Andy Potts finally at last was able to get the go-ahead for the race last week, full details to follow. Riders are asked not to ride in Tollymore prior to the event as this will place all the hard work achieved by the organisers in jeopardy.
